Pack your bags. It’s time to take your business global.
Did you know that there is easy-to-access government support that helps Australian businesses to reclaim thousands of dollars in overseas marketing expenses?
If your business sells an Australian product or service to overseas markets, then you’re more than likely to qualify. While the application process can be a little difficult to navigate, a grant consultant can make it more than worth your while, with the potential to receive up to $150,000 in reimbursements. It sounds too good to be true, but Australian SMEs have been seeing positive results.
What is the EMDG?
The Export Market Development Grants scheme, aka the EMDG scheme, is government support for Aussies looking to scale their businesses to overseas markets. The EMDG was established by the Australian Government to encourage small and medium-sized businesses to export Australian products and services across a range of industries, including tourism.
While it’s been around for over 40 years, the EMDG has recently received a $60M boost by the Federal Government, meaning it’s a great time to take advantage of the funding.
The scheme reimburses up to 50% of eligible expenses above $5000, with a total grant on offer of $150,000.
As a bonus, you can claim the previous two years for your first-time grant.
The maximum export grant amount in any year is $150,000. A business can claim the EMDG 8 times.
Expenses you can claim are:
- advertising and marketing
- marketing consultants
- IP protection and insurance
- overseas representatives
- trade fairs, seminars and in-store promotions
- bringing buyers to Australia
- free samples
The EMDG allows you to double your marketing budget
You could be claiming back up to 50% of your expenses on your:
- Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram marketing
- exhibition booths
- print and TV media
- marketing consultants
- patent and trademark lawyers’ fees
How to access the EMDG scheme
The export grant is claimed after the financial year in which you spent the money. BlueRock can help you to prepare a claim and submit it to AusTrade. We’ll then support you through the AusTrade audit process to ensure you get the best result.
The export grant is paid in two buckets:
- Immediately after being accepted, you’ll be paid an initial amount up to $40,000.
- In June of the following year, you’ll be paid the remainder, pro-rated depending on the funds available in the limited pool.
You need to apply between 1 July and 2 December.
